Persons involved in the project: main coordinators were 4 teachers and 20 students, other teachers and students were also involved, it was an all-school project
The third / final/ year of the project Socrates 2005-2006 had the main topic music. We were involved in the roots of music in each country.
All the school year, again a group of ten students and the teachers met every Friday and worked on the project, planned events connected with the project, made films, brochures etc. They begun in September, 2005 and at first they worked on the roots of music from Middle Ages up to present. They found out that this topic is very broad and therefore they tried to pick only the important and translate it into English. Then they focused on one of the most important person of Czech music, Bedřich Smetana. They studied his biography and decided to visit his home town Litomyšl. This trip was done on 7/10/2005. 19 students and 3 teachers went to the home town of Bedřich Smetana where they visited his museum and learned about the history of the town. They made a documentary Litomyšl- In the Traces of Bedřich Smetana which was presented at the first workshop in Iceland on 15 – 21/10/2005. Three of our teachers went there. The pupils of the Icelandic school prepared a nice music performance, we heard Icelandic folk songs, visited music lessons. The most impressive was the performance of a music band of students who also composed their music. We were invited to two dramatical performances. One of them was performed by professionals for the smallest pupils; the other was a school play. It was classical fairy tale and the pupils themselves made the decorations and the puppets. We liked our stay very much and returned enriched by a lot of new experiences. At this meeting we planned and agreed on next meetings and suggested the final products of this school year: pens, postcards and the brochure about the common roots of music in each country. When coming back, we made a competition of the best postcard design of the Socrates project, about 60 students took part. The winners were presented on the web sites and were also presented at the second workshop in German Geithain on 6– 9/ 12/2005 where 2 teachers and 4 students participated. We visited city Leipzig and learned about J.S.Bach. German students prepared a concert of boys’ rock group from Geithain and music performance of teachers’ staff and students where we could hear German folk songs and English hits and at the end the EU anthem Ode to Joy.
In January we started to prepare our performance Great music show to be performed at the fourth meeting. As a lot of students attend Art school, we decided for cooperation with this school. We elaborated history and basic function of this type of school which was interesting for the partnership schools and we decided to publish it inour brochure.
On 26/3 – 1/4/ 2006 19 students accompanied by 3 teachers went to Italian Fermo. We joined two events- 3rd meeting and an exchange programme. In September, 20 Italian students came to Klášterec and stayed in families of our students. This programme arose thank so to Socrates. Most students who work on the project were also in this programme so we joined both things. Students learnt the city Fermo, its school; they attended a class, visited the capital city Rome and Florence and then wrote about some remarkable sightseeings on our web sites. One of the main topics was a discussion on the final design of the postcard, a product of this school year. The best designs were chosen and a text was discussed. Another point was the layout of the brochure, which is done every year. And finally, we planned the last workshop in Klášterec nad Ohří in May. Each school also presented their work, and again some students performed music performances. The German school presented their exhibition focused on history of German music, Icelandic school showed us how to make PC music, and Italians presented their film about a music composer Casa di Rossini. Our students presented a film made at music lessons and sang some of our folk songs.
The fourth workshop took place in Klášterec in May 2nd to 5th. The last evaluation was made, the brochure was finished, postcards handed and last presentation was done. The guests could visit Prague, see some interesting sightseeings and in the evening they saw a performance in Laterna Magika. They also went to a castle Loket, an art gallery Kisza in Kadaň. They had a chance to see Art school in Klášterec and they went to a kindergarten where children danced in a country style. The gymnasium with the cooperation of Art school and 1st elementary school and special school organised a great concert of students and pupils of these schools. And they were happy to hear from the foreign guests that the concert had been really great.
We enclose our final product – brochure about the project year 2005-2006, a postcard, a pen, a brochure Our work in Pictures, film In Traces of Bedřich Smetana and web sites www.gymkl.cz where you can get more information. The most important „product“of this work is not a material thing, though. The participants could learn about other cultures, other life styles, read about roots of not only own country and meet new people, who become great friends lets hope for a long time. We would like to thank NA agency Socrates for financial support without which we could not realise the project. Europe is not only an open space but also various and therefore it is extremely important to learn each other. This is a good investment for future. Nowadays, all participants could agree.
